U-100 insulin syringe
Units to mL: how many mL is 100 units?
On a U-100 insulin syringe, 100 units = 1 mL, so 1 unit = 0.01 mL. To convert, divide units by 100 for mL, or multiply mL by 100 for units. 10 units is 0.1 mL; 50 units is 0.5 mL.

Insulin syringes top out at 1 mL (100 units). Anything over 100 units takes more than one syringe.
Insulin syringe sizes
| Syringe | Holds | Tick marks |
|---|---|---|
| 0.3 mL | 30 units | Every 1 unit (some every ½ unit) |
| 0.5 mL | 50 units | Every 1 unit |
| 1 mL | 100 units | Every 2 units |
Every size is U-100, so 1 unit is 0.01 mL on all three. Smaller syringes just have finer marks.
Units measure volume, not amount
The unit lines on an insulin syringe are a volume scale. How much of a reconstituted peptide sits in each unit depends on the vial: its mg and the mL of water you added. A 5 mg vial mixed with 2 mL holds 25 mcg per unit; the same vial mixed with 1 mL holds 50 mcg per unit. Work out your vial in the reconstitution calculator, or see it drawn on a syringe in the Mix Lab.
Keep the math with the vial.

FAQ
How many mL is 100 units?
100 units on a U-100 insulin syringe is exactly 1 mL. That is one full 1 mL (100-unit) syringe.
How many mL is 10 units?
10 units is 0.1 mL. On a 100-unit syringe that is 5 of the 2-unit tick marks; on a 30- or 50-unit syringe it is the line marked 10.
How many units is 1 mL?
1 mL is 100 units on a U-100 syringe. 2 mL is 200 units and 3 mL is 300 units, which is more than one 1 mL syringe holds.
Is 1 mL the same as 1 cc?
Yes. 1 cc (cubic centimetre) and 1 mL are the same volume, so 100 units = 1 mL = 1 cc on a U-100 syringe.
What does U-100 or 100 units/mL mean?
U-100 means the syringe is marked for 100 units per mL, so each unit mark is 0.01 mL. Almost all insulin syringes sold in the US are U-100. A U-40 syringe is marked 40 units per mL, so its units are larger; the two are not interchangeable.
Do units on the syringe tell me how much of a peptide I’m drawing?
No. Syringe units measure volume only. How much of a peptide is in each unit depends on how the vial was mixed: the vial’s mg and the mL of water added. The reconstitution calculator does that math for your vial.
Are syringe units the same as IU?
For insulin, the syringe is designed so 1 unit mark draws 1 IU of U-100 insulin. For anything else, IU is an amount of the substance and syringe units are volume, so they only match if the vial is mixed to that concentration.
